What is Asbestos? What is Asbestos used for?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral in the Earth. Asbestos is heat-resistant and is used in insulating and fire-resistant materials. Many different residential and commercial buildings contain asbestos in their structure, whether in spray-applied retardant, thermal system insulation, or other various materials. It is used in over 3,000 building materials because of its strength and insulation qualities. Some of the more common asbestos containing materials (ACM) are acoustic and textured wall and ceiling treatments (such as popcorn ceilings), floor tiles, sheet vinyl flooring, drywall materials, plaster, stucco, roofing, and pipe and tank insulation. Production of these asbestos containing materials for residential structures was banned in 1978 in the U.S. Therefore, it’s imperative to have any suspected material tested if the structure is built before 1978.
What are the health risks of Asbestos?
Asbestos in material is not the health hazard in question; but when any of those asbestos containing materials are disturbed. When asbestos containing material is disturbed (or broken), the hazardous mineral is released into the air. Breathing in airborne, friable asbestos can be dangerous because the fibers in the asbestos sit in the lungs. The fibers are sharp, cutting microscopic size abrasions, allowing the asbestos to flow deeper into the walls of the lungs; and continual exposure can increase the amount of fibers that remain in the lungs. Because the body does not resist this decay, it fails to eliminate asbestos the way other trace elements are removed. Therefore, it is imperative to stick to strict indoor air quality guidelines, in accordance with the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Additionally, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations are required by all staff as to follow with utmost safety and caution.
What does Asbestos Abatement mean? Do I need it to be done?
Abatement is the deconstruction of asbestos containing contents. Using proper equipment, tools, and PPE (personal protective equipment), we ensure the removal of hazardous materials to be quick and utilize as much safety precaution as possible. Once all of the hazardous material is removed, our testing crews come in and acquire clearance test results to ensure safety and completion.
We cover all aspects for abatement including the Catastrophe Cleanup of the structure. While other companies only abate the hazardous material, we perform everything all the way to the build back to make your home or building better than before.
Commercial buildings are not held under the same safety in building materials as homes, thus are commonly abundant in asbestos and lead containing materials. Your commercial building may still be hot with asbestos even after the outlawing of asbestos containing materials after 1985.
Residential homes built or updated before 1985 have a high chance of containing asbestos in the building materials. In 1985, asbestos containing materials were outlawed in the U.S. Call us today to have it tested.
